Environmental Progress Report
Report highlights
At MayHawk, we set clear targets — and share exactly how we’re meeting them. These reports mark the progress we’ve made and encourages a growing confidence in our future plans.
We have increased our use of Recycled materials
100% of our packaging can be recycled, and we’re making steady progress toward using more recycled or renewable materials in our packaging. In 2024, 34 percent of the materials used in our packaging came from recycled materials and the rest from responsibly managed forests.
100% plastic free
In 2020 we achieved 100% plastic free packaging for our chocolate bars. And we have steadily removed over 97% of plastic from our wholesale delivery packaging.
We have increased the amount of ingredients we are growing ourselves
100% of all mint, rosemary, tarragon, chilli peppers, lemon grass, tomatoes, basil, etc. used in our chocolate are now annually grown organically and sustainably in our own greenhouse.
Oak saplings grown at MayHawk to help offset our carbon emissions
Sourcing high quality ingredients with greater traceability
Since 2013 we have been sourcing our ingredients with greater traceability and accountability. Today we only purchase from reliable and ethical supply chain partners.
We have planted over 70 oak saplings since 2015
In 2015, in order to off-set our carbon emissions, we decided to collect local acorns and grow oak trees. Each year we collect and grow around 50 acorns.
At our nursery near our greenhouse we have now grown several hundred oak saplings from acorns collected locally. And we have planted out over 70 small oak trees around our facility.
We have chosen to fund local and global reforestation schemes
We donate to two charitable foundations working with forest ecosystems.
The Woodland Trust (UK) is the largest woodland conservation charity in the United Kingdom and is concerned with the creation, protection, and restoration of native-woodland heritage. It has planted over 68 million trees since 1972.
The Rainforest Alliance (Global) partners with local communities to co-design and implement sustainable conservation and community development programs in tropical areas where commodity production threatens rural communities and the ecosystem.

At MayHawk we turn food waste into nutrient rich compost.
Our Zero Waste to Landfill initiative
In 2024, our composting efforts allowed us to achieve a waste diversion rate of around 80 percent. Any clean, natural by-products from chocolate making (cocoa bean husks for example) are collected and converted into nutrient-rich compost. The compost is used in our greenhouse to grow our own ingredients.
Since 2021, when our push towards Zero-Waste to Landfill began, we have been identifying all waste sources and characterising each stream in the waste inventory.
We aim to accelerate our progress in this area through to 2027 by being focused on reducing or eliminating purchases of single-use items as part of our zero-waste goals.
Using clean, renewable energy sources has now reached 60% at our production facility
Most of our Scope 2 carbon footprint comes from the electricity used to manufacture our products.
Since the company moved to our present location in 2010 we have been steadily increasing the amount of clean, renewable energy we use in the production of our chocolate.
We now use around 60% clean renewable energy in our buildings – which comes from local sources of solar panels, wind turbines, and biomass generated electricity.

Our packaging has been reduced by 35% and our shipping boxes have been redesigned.
Since 2022 we have cut our packaging mass and volume down by 35% in our chocolate bar boxes. Reducing waste and making them easier to recycle.
And designing with the Earth in mind we have introduced new packaging and shipping boxes for wholesale that optimise space and fit our products better. While also increasing the use of recycled fibre-based materials.

MayHawk supports the Woodland Trust and the Rainforest Alliance
Progress needs both a direction and an intention. That’s why it helps to know where we are and what comes next in our journey.
